The San Jose Sharks took former CD Select talent, (2004/05) Nick Petrecki, a 6'3, 215 lb defensemen, in the 1st round of the NHL draft last week in Columbia, Ohio. Nick will be pursuing his college career at Boston College under the watchful eye of the highly acclaimed coach, Jerry York.
Also in the NHL draft this past June was 6'6, 200lb. goalkeeper Scott Darling. Scott, who was selected 153rd in the early 6th round, had a tremendous season for the Capital District Selects with over a 92% save percentage. Before this spring's draft, Scott was ranked 11th out of 30 of the top goalies in North America.
Shawn Weller, another CD Select alumni, (2004-2005,) 6'2, 190lb forward coming off an impressive Junior year at Div. 1 Clarkson University leading the team in scoring and to the ECAC Championship, signed a 3 year contract with the Ottawa Senators. During Weller's senior year in high school, Shawn was drafted by Ottawa in the 3rd round while playing for the Capital District Seclects and was of the teams leading scorers.
Jay Leach, a former CD Select defensemen (1996-1997,) recently signed a NHL contract with theTampa Bay Lightening. Leach has captained the Providence Bruins in the AHL for the past two years. After playing with the CD Selects, Jay attended Providence College where he was selected Captain. While attending Providence he was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes.
Ben Guite a forward who played with CD Selects, (1995-1996,) signed a two-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche this spring. Ben was originally drafted by Montreal Canadians and after playing at the University of Maine and winning an NCAA Championship, signed with Boston Bruins where he played in over 400 games in the AHL with the Providence Bruins. After signing a contract with Colorado, Ben was assigned to the Albany River Rats, their AHL affiliate.
